Biography

Dušan Alimpijević was born in 1986 in Belgrade, a city where basketball is not just a sport but part of its identity. Although he played through youth and senior categories, he realized very early that his true place was on the sideline – in understanding the game, people, and systems.

His coaching career began exceptionally early, practically without a classic transition from a playing career. Already in his early twenties, he takes on responsibility and enters the world of professional basketball, building a reputation as a coach who thinks several moves ahead. His rise was not linear, but fast – driven by ambition, work, and willingness to take risks when others would not.

The turning point comes early in his senior career, when a serious traffic accident (2007) effectively ends his playing development. At the moment he was supposed to be building a career on the court, he was forced to pivot. That event was not merely an interruption, but an acceleration – instead of a gradual transition, he moved into coaching almost overnight.

It is precisely from that experience that his specific approach comes: from the start he had no luxury of learning without pressure, but had to understand the game, people, and system in real time. That early turn shaped his style and thinking – pragmatic, fast, focused on solutions, with a clear sense of how to extract the maximum from available resources.

He first gained wider attention through his work at FMP, where he showed the ability to extract the maximum from a young, development-oriented squad. It was there that what would become his trademark became clear – working with players who have yet to become what they can be.

Throughout all phases of his career, several constants appear: speed of decision-making, trust in young players, and insistence on a clear system of play. Alimpijević does not build a team around names, but around roles – and that is precisely where his greatest value lies.

Today he is regarded as one of the most interesting coaches of his generation, with a career already marked by major challenges and results, and still room to push the boundaries further.
